HACKWOOD PARK, park in Basingstoke
The first form suggests 'haw(thorn berry) wood' (a rather curious way of expressing the idea), but all others superficially suggest hypothetical Middle English 'Hacchewude'='gate wood', in the sense of 'forest gate'. A licence to empark was granted in 1223, and, given the date of the earliest mention, we could conclude that the name dates from then. However 'hacche' appears as 'hack' and the like only in the North Country; we would expect hypothetical 'Hatchwood' here. It could rather contain Middle English 'hake' whose Old English ancestor meant 'hook, door fastening', as possibly in 'Hackpen' (Wiltshire) 'boltable enclosure'. Hypothetical 'Hakewude' would mean therefore 'wood which could be securely closed off'. The grant of 1223 speaks of denying the king's deer free access and exit (VCH IV: 122). Against this attractive solution is the dearth of forms with a medial 'e'.
